There are protein shakes for vegans out there, In fact, there is an entire industry built on the back of catering for vegan athletes and bodybuilders. Obviously vegans don’t have as much choice when it comes to protein powders, mass gainers and protein bars, but such products do exist if you know where to look.
In this guide we’ll focus on those products to help you picket the very best as we take a look at the Best Protein Shakes for Vegans.
Pulsin – Everything
Pulsin are one of the most exciting supplement manufacturers on the market right now, especially if you’re vegan. We mentioned them briefly in our Protein Powders for Vegetarians list, but because most of their powders are also vegan, they deserve a mention here as well.
Pulsin got their start with cold pressed, raw food bars, made by compressing natural and organic dates, cashew nuts, dried fruit, raw cacao and other organic ingredients. They advanced into releasing their own powders. These come in relatively small bags emblazoned with the Pulsin name and a 1970s hippy aesthetic.
They do have a whey concentrate product, but the majority of their protein powders are all vegan. These include pea protein, brown rice protein and, our personal favorite, hemp protein. You can create your own protein mix out of these. You can add them to meal-replacement drinks, you can create protein bars and cakes, or you could just make a post-workout drink like you would with whey.
Pulsin were also the very first to release an organic sunflower protein powder. This is low in fat, it has no gluten and it delivers 45 gams of protein per 100 grams. It will be the perfect powder for many athletes who can’t have whey or gluten.
Sunwarrior Raw Vegan Protein
This has been a big hit since the beginning and is one of the most popular vegan protein shakes out there. Fans of this drink rave about the taste and in particular the vanilla flavor. There are three flavors in total, vanilla, chocolate and natural, and they use stevia to naturally sweeten it. The powder itself is a blend of 100% raw hemp and pea proteins, as well a host of superfoods to boost the vitamin and mineral profile.
This is a pure product that tastes much better than it looks and gives you a big boost of health protein and other nutrients.
Reflex Nutrition Vegan Protein
We are a big fan of the Reflex brand. They are a no-frills supplement brand that release a host of products and always nail them. You won’t find multi-colored packaging, but at the same time you won’t find big prices either. They are reasonably priced and they always deliver.
Such is the case with their vegan protein blend. This comes from pea protein and is sweetened with stevia to ensure it goes down easy. There is also a digestive enzyme complex here that helps with absorption. The best flavor is chocolate and it goes great with milk alternatives, such as soy milk.
It may seem like an odd inclusion on a list of vegan protein powders, considering it’s technically a meal replacement, but with 30 grams of pure vegan protein per serving, as well as healthy fats, carbs and plenty of fiber, it’s the ultimate vegan protein.
Huel is similar to Soylent, as well as to Whole Fuel from MyProtein, only we prefer it. It is made in the UK and is one of the most completely and nutritionally sound meal replacements you will ever see. We have personally been using Huel for several months now and have never felt better. It is very reasonably priced, it’s complete and it’s as good as a morning shake and meal replacement as it is as a post-workout drink.
It’s growing in popularity all of the time and there are many alternative drinks out there that offer something similar. This industry is getting bigger and bigger and there’s a very good reason for that.
Nutriseed Brown Rice Protein
Brown rice protein is an underused protein powder that we feel needs more attention. It may not deliver the most amount of protein per gram and there are better powders out there for this. However, it’s always good to have a little variety and this one ticks many boxes. What’s more, this Nutriseed version of brown rice protein tastes great, with a unique nutty flavor that you won’t get with other protein powders.
It’s raw, it’s organic and it’s unflavored. In many ways, they are similar to Pulsin in what they offer to Reflex in their no-nonsense approach. Just bear in mind that this is not flavored. So, when we say “unique nutty flavor” we don’t mean that it tastes like creamy peanut butter and that you’ll want to drink it everyday. We mean that it serves to add additional protein and a distinctive flavor to smoothies and protein powder mixes.
MRM Veggie Protein
The vanilla flavor of this vegan protein powder is one of the better tasting vegan protein powders we have tasted. What’s more, the nutrient profile is brilliant, strong enough to rival Huel.
As well as base of pea protein, it contains hemp protein, flax seeds, chia seeds and extracts of spinach, raspberry and carrot. All of this helps to create a strong profile of protein, complex carbs, vitamins and minerals, with plenty of fibre thrown in. Add the fact that it is quite cheap and is easily digested and pleasant tasting and it’s easy to see why this is one of the most popular protein powders for vegans on the market right now.
Last but not least is sunflower protein from Natures Plus. This is not quite as impressive as the Pulsin variety and we prefer Pulsin, but this is cheaper and it’s a good alternative to have. It has a nutty texture and flavor and it makes for a great addition to smoothies and to protein powder mixtures.
It is a complete protein powder and it’s great to add it to you diet to ensure that you’re not just filling up on pea and soy protein. As with the Pulsin variety of sunflower protein, it is also soy, allergen and gluten free.
