Ibotta Reviews: Cashback Promise, But is it a Scam? (Honest Review)

Ibotta Reviews

There are oodles of websites online which promise to give you cash back when you spend money. There’s Ebates, Ibotta, Checkout 51 and about a hundred more.

One of our favorites, though, is Ibotta. Ibotta is a mobile phone app which promises a percentage of money back on online and in store purchases.

So what do we like about Ibotta? What needs work? What are others saying in their Ibotta reviews? Let’s look at the app, and you can download and decide for yourself!

What is Ibotta?

As I mentioned, Ibotta is an app for your mobile phone. It’s available for iOS devices as well as Android, and the app is free to install. Once you’ve downloaded Ibotta, you can sign in with your Facebook account or you can create an unassociated account. I recommend that you go ahead and use the email associated with your PayPal.

Once you’ve downloaded ibotta, you’ll see a few featured deals, as well as shopping categories. There are travel cash back offers, grocery offers, and even offers on electronics and in stores like Walmart.

Take a few minutes to scroll through the offers. Select individual offers to add to your account. For example, you can earn $.25 back on a gallon of milk – any brand. Go ahead and add anything you’d be interested in buying.

Once you’ve created your list, see if you need to link any savings club cards. For instance, some grocery stores’ deals won’t work if you haven’t linked the “MVP” or other card.

Finally, go shopping! The cash back offer will automatically be applied to your account, as long as you begin shopping within the app for online purchases. For in-store purchases, it doesn’t matter – just keep your receipts.

Over the past year or so, we’ve found Ibotta to be one of the most reliable ways to earn cash back on purchases. So what are other Ibotta reviews saying? What would we change about the app, given the chance?

Ibotta Reviews: The Good Stuff

Ibotta really is a reliable way to get money back on purchases. The percentage you’ll earn can be anywhere from 2% all the way up to around 10%, depending on the store and the category.

You’ll have tons of options for local stores, too. For example, your tiny little chain of grocery stores in Olathe, Kansas is probably included on the list. Link up your savings card and go shopping!

We love, love, love the variety of things you can get discounts on. We’ve used it for hotel stays and car rentals, as well as on the usual everyday stuff like toothpaste and coffee. (Cash back on coffee – what?!)

We also (kind of) like the referral program. Depending on the program Ibotta is running, you can earn money for every referral who signs up and takes advantage of an offer through the app.

You may not notice your savings adding up very quickly at first. If you’re anything like us, it’s because you forgot to open the app before you went shopping. Other Ibotta reviews said the same.

But even $5 per week saved on groceries adds up to $260 every year – that’s a car payment! Besides that, as you remember to use the app, you’ll begin to earn more.

Money that you earn from shopping through the app is usually credited to your account within a day. You’ll need to have an Ibotta balance of $20 to cash out.

Cash out is via PayPal or Venmo, and is free. That’s one of the things we like best about Ibotta. There’s no fee to get the money that you earned, other than any PayPal withdrawal fees your bank may charge.

So what don’t we like about the app? Read on to find out what we’d change about the Ibotta app.

Negative Ibotta Reviews

If you’re looking for negative Ibotta reviews, you won’t find them here. However, there are a few things that we’d change about the app if we could,

First of all, you absolutely must remember to shop through the app. If you don’t, you’ll miss out on your offer. There’s no way to retroactively add online purchases to your shopping history. What’s done is done.

That said, we’ve made a few Amazon purchases that we forgot to make through the app. We immediately cancelled the order, then reordered through the app. The money was credited with no problem.

Another thing we dislike is that sometimes the categories aren’t exactly what we’re looking for. Here’s an example:

Ibotta recently offered cash back on Amazon purchases. The catch was that the current promotions were for Amazon Home, Amazon Baby and Amazon Home Services.

We needed a pet bed.

We had found one that we liked on the Amazon website, but it was in the Pet Care category. That meant we wouldn’t get our 6% cash back. So we searched instead in the Amazon Home category and found a suitable pet bed. Not the exact one Chester said he wanted, but he liked it all the same.

If you’re shopping for something specific, do plan ahead. Keep an eye out for promotions on Ibotta, and keep checking back. The offers change regularly, so you’ll need to be mindful of expiration dates.

Should You Use Ibotta?

Ibotta Review

Sure! We recommend that you give Ibotta a go. Download it onto you phone – what harm can it do?

Once you download it, you’ll need to do a little bit of research into what offers are in your area. You’ll also want to put it on your home screen so that you’ll remember to use it. But once you get in the habit of using it, you’ll find that your savings really do start to add up.

Decide you don’t want to use it anymore? No matter. Just delete the thing. There’s no personal information stored in Ibotta – the only thing you’ll give them is your PayPal address.

We suggest you give Ibotta a shot. We’ve found it to be a quick and easy way to earn money back on purchases, and there’s no shortage of offers.
